Hino Trucks Announces “Project Z” – Paving the Path to Zero Emissions

Hino Trucks Announces “Project Z” – Paving the Path to Zero Emissions

Early this month, Hino trucks announced, Project Z, the company’s development path to zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV), ranging from class 4 to class 8.

The ZEV products ranged from a class 5 on a SEA Electric SEA-Drive 120a on a Hino M5 chassis, up to a Hino XL Series class 8 tractor powered by Toyota’s Fuel Cell system.

Hino’s Project Z YouTube video, showcasing the most comprehensive line-up of zero-emissions trucks, partnering with technology leaders in advanced electrification drive systems, truly highlights these next-level vehicles.

Tony Fairweather, President of SEA Electric gave the low down on his Hino M5. It’s a 100% electric commercial vehicle that operates with a JJE high voltage electric motor and produces around 170 HP and 1100 foot-pound of torque. One of the smart ways they are operating this system is that they developed a battery system that doesn’t require thermal management. This means that they have eliminated the need for the cooling and heating system that adds weight and complexity but also takes energy from the battery system. It’s all about managing energy.

Eric Coupal-Sikes, Vice President of E-Mobility Engineering, Hexagon Purus Systems highlighted the battery packs in his Hino XL7 as well as showcases the fact that it is over 33,000 foot-pounds.

Sustainability is the future and Hino’s new line-up of zero-emission trucks will be a piece of the puzzle that will get us there. Hino first established an environmental leadership position back in 1991 with the global sale of its hybrid buses, but Project Z is advancing this with demonstration vehicles in the first half of 2021, customer demonstrations in 2022, and production prior to 2024.

This is just some of the information regarding this project. Over the coming months, Hino Trucks will unveil more details about the cutting edge technologies and vehicles to come out of Project Z.
